Yep, couldn't agree more. Business does need to be simplified to an extent to make it easier for us to understand, but not to the point where it's SO simplified that your KPIs don't actually tell you anything you need to know about what's working or not working in your business.

By the same token, you can't manage a business with 30 KPIs, where you become more obsessed.with measuring the metric than you do with actually making sensible business decisions. Somewhere in between there is a happy medium - one which doesn't conform to hard and fast rules.

I do think there is some value in reducing certain aspects of communication to threes - the 'rule of threes' is well established as a speech-writing tool - but as with so many things it's a case of employing the right trick at the right time and not doing everything the same way.

I'll take your word for it, Bob. Thanks for clarifying.
My memory had the Iron Maiden advert and the 1984 games almost simultaneously, and what research I could uncover seemed to confirm that. But I'm more than happy to stand corrected!

Thanks for reading the blog, hope you enjoyed it...

Frankly, I find this approach appalling. It reduces education to a set of quantitaive metrics and forces teachers into focussing as much on admin and standardisation as on tending to the differing development needs of individual puplis. Worse still, it stigmatises 'underperforming' schools, even though there may in reality be no discernible difference between a good school and a not-good one.

No doubt Gove will couch all this in terms of 'raising the bar', but I think he forgets the fundamental truth that what makes education really work is not the performance of schools or even the performance of pupils but the performance of teachers in terms of finding a way to support all types of pupil. I'm not entirely sure how any of the current actions help achieve that.

[...] I Reckon a one-size-fits-all set of criteria for measuring children is flawed, and the current obsession with quantifying and counting everything is at best imperfect and at worst could suppress children’s personalities and creativity.
